Introducing AFYA

AFYA is Swahili for ‘Health and Wellbeing’ and this underpins our philosophy as a company. We combined this with the West African symbol of the Hwe Mu Dua which stresses the need and importance of the quality in human endeavour.

The two messages define who we are and what we aim to give the people and institutions we work with. The AFYA leadership team is made up of experienced coaches, trainers and teachers who have a background in a variety of sports including Rugby Union, Netball, Tennis and Athletics.

The AFYA team consists of internationally recognized coaches and sports educators from around the world, stretching as far as Australia and New Zealand. We have incorporated multiple skills (including bush craft) and sports programmes into an approach to educating and training young children and athletes in order to provide holistic, enjoyable and demanding courses.

The courses we run have been specially designed to incorporate insights that have generated some of the best teams and athletes across the world.

The Camp Structure

AFYA will provide a structured sports activity programme for children aged between 4 ½ to 13 plus. There will be a variety of sports and activities on offer and all will be delivered age and ability appropriate. AFYA will provide all coaches level 2 or above to deliver the activities. Dependant on numbers in each group the coaches will be supported by coaching assistants to ensure that all sessions are run in accordance with safety requirements of coach to child ratio.

Maximum capacity is 30 children per group.

The children can do full or half days and AFYA will provide a wrap around care facility for early drop off or late collection.

The camp will be made up of four AFYA Tribes:

• THE LIONS: 4 ½ yrs – 6 ½ yrs
• THE BULLS: 6 ½ yrs – 9 yrs
• THE LEOPARDS: 9 yrs – 13 yrs
• THE BUFFALOS: 13 plus

The 13 plus age group will have the option to participate in either a more technical and match based programme where they can concentrate on improving their chosen sport or they can follow the activity programme which is more ‘games and activity’ based. Each child will be given a report at the end of the camp on their achievement and future goals.

The 13 plus technical and match based option lends itself to the individual continuing their development with AFYA via the PPD page on the AFYA website.

Typical Daily Structure

08:00 – 09:00 Early Bird Start (extra £5)
09:00 – 09:15 Camp registration
09:15 – 10:45 ACTIVITY ONE all tribes are in their separate groups participating in different activities.
10:45 – 11:00 BREAK and Tribes get ready for second activity.
11:15 – 12:30 ACTIVITY TWO all tribes are in their separate groups participating in different activities.
12:30 – 13:30 LUNCH BREAK. Supervised lunch break and play. This is also the time when the morning only children are collected and signed out and the afternoon only children are signed in.
13:45 – 15:15 ACTIVITY THREE all tribes are in their separate groups participating in different activities.
15:15 – 15:30 BREAK
15:35 – 17:00 ACTIVITY FOUR. The children have a range of activities which are craft or outdoor exploring based. Eg. Loom band crazy, cycling proficiency, orienteering, treasure hunt. This last hour is a wind down hour before home time.
17:30 SIGN OUT

The Advantage for Parents/Employees

Instead of a holiday in front of the Xbox or television we aim to provide parents with an on site option for holiday activities which benefits both parent and child. Parents will be able to spend lunch time with their children and have the piece of mind that they are on site…

The parents will receive a weekly report to see their child’s progress. At the end of each camp we will hold a family BBQ incorporating a kids vs parents sports competition.

Meet the AFYA team

Ben Wood

Managing Director

Ben founded AFYA with the aim of giving children and young adults an opportunity to express and develop themselves in sport both as individuals and members of a team. Ben is an ex-army officer and RFU coach and has over 25 years of coaching and training experience in a variety of settings.

James Wade

Head of Training & Development Programmes

James joined the AFYA team in November 2014 and brings an invaluable amount of rugby knowledge and expertise. James has over a decade of experience in the Premiership, working for Sale Sharks and London Wasps during periods of great success for both clubs. He is also head coach for Oxford University Rugby Club.
